Challenge Accepted... Eventually

I’d love to be able to say that I am the kind of person that accepts challenges head-on with extra enthusiasm. But if I told you that, I’d probably be lying. I’m naturally a pretty timid person, so when new things are thrown my way, I often take it my own sweet time. This is just in my nature. I mostly have to take some time to talk myself into it, slowly get my feet wet, and then eventually take the plunge. I don’t try to completely avoid new things, per say, but I’m just not a very assertive person when it comes to facing the unknown.A few weeks ago, Shannon came up to me and said, “I need you to build an e-commerce site for my customer’s employees… from scratch.” Ah! Just the thought of the web design scares the bejeezus out of me, so you can about imagine my reaction. Let’s just say I wasn’t totally on board… yet. This is the great thing about the two people that I share an office with, though. They know how far to push me and trust me to do things that I don’t even believe myself capable of. They're awesome like that.Anyway, here I am, internally having a heart attack, telling her that I can try to make a website happen but I would need some extra time. Now, for the first week or so, I completely avoided the thought of that dark, scary place of web design. Matt would ask me how it was going and I just knew that I needed to get it going but didn’t really know how to. This is always the challenge for me… the whole getting started bit. After a few phone calls and extra help, I finally got something started and had a website in the works.Fast-forward to two weeks later and I am now proud to say that I successfully made a functioning website!  Thanks to the lovely support people at Volusion, to Max for sharing some of his knowledge, and to the push from my awesome co-workers- I can now say that I actually understand the world of e-commerce site-building. Now I feel way more valuable and knowledgeable too! It’s not totally perfect… there are parts that I wish I knew how to code and to be able to go in and change, but for the most part I’m satisfied with the result.
